Caramel Apple Puff Pastry (Printable Version)

Flaky pastry envelopes cinnamon-spiced apples and a drizzle of caramel for a warm, inviting treat.

# Ingredients:

→ Apple Filling

01 - 450 g medium firm apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
02 - 28 g unsalted butter
03 - 45 g brown sugar
04 - 25 g granulated sugar
05 - 1 tsp ground cinnamon
06 - ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
07 - 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
08 - 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 10 ml water (slurry)

→ Pastry

09 - 1 sheet of thawed puff pastry (approx. 250 g), high-quality with multiple layers
10 - 1 large egg beaten with 15 ml milk or water for egg wash

→ Topping

11 - 120 ml caramel sauce, store-bought or homemade
12 - Optional: powdered sugar, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream for serving

# Steps:

01 - Peel, core, and slice apples thinly. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally until apples soften and release juices. If too runny, stir in cornstarch slurry; cook until thickened. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
02 - Preheat oven to 200°C. On a floured surface, gently roll out thawed puff pastry to smooth creases. Cut into eight equal rectangles or squares. Place half the pieces onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
03 - Spoon apple filling onto each pastry piece on the baking sheet. Drizzle with caramel sauce. Cover with remaining pastry pieces, pressing edges firmly. Crimp edges with a fork to seal. Brush tops with egg wash for a golden crust.
04 - Bake in preheated oven for 18–22 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Remove and cool slightly on a rack before serving.
05 - Drizzle additional caramel sauce over pastries. Optionally dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

# Notes:

01 - Use firm apples to prevent mushy filling. Chill assembled pastries for 10 minutes before baking for optimal puffiness. Store-bought caramel sauce is convenient, but homemade adds richer flavor.
