Gourmet French Onion Burgers (Printable Version)

Juicy beef patties with caramelized onions and melted Gruyère on toasted garlic-butter buns.

# Ingredients:

→ Beef Patties

01 - 450 grams ground beef with 80/20 fat content
02 - 15 milliliters Worcestershire sauce
03 - Salt to taste
04 - Freshly ground black pepper to taste

→ Caramelized Onions

05 - 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
06 - 30 grams unsalted butter
07 - 5 grams granulated sugar
08 - 60 milliliters beef broth, divided as needed
09 - Fresh thyme leaves, for garnish

→ Cheese and Buns

10 - 120 grams Gruyère cheese, sliced
11 - 4 brioche hamburger buns

→ Optional Garlic Butter

12 - 15 grams unsalted butter, softened
13 - 1 clove garlic, minced

# Steps:

01 - Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sprinkle sugar. Cook slowly for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until onions reach a deep amber color. Add small splashes of beef broth if bottom of pan darkens too much to deglaze.
02 - In a bowl, gently mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until just combined. Form into four patties slightly larger than buns and press a slight dimple in the center of each to prevent puffing during cooking.
03 - Heat a skillet or grill to medium-high. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness, flipping once without pressing down. Remove and let rest for 2-3 minutes to redistribute juices.
04 - Combine softened butter and minced garlic if using. Spread on cut sides of buns and toast in a clean skillet or under a broiler until golden, about 30-60 seconds.
05 - Place patties on bottom buns. Top with caramelized onions and Gruyère slices. Broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese melts and bubbles with browned edges. Garnish with fresh thyme and cover with top buns.

# Notes:

01 - Use a cast iron skillet for optimal onion caramelization. Allow patties to reach room temperature before cooking for even doneness. Caramelized onions can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated.
